When he follows the rules or does something "above and beyond" he gets to hang a "happy square" on his board. Breaking a rule means he gets a "sad square." Now that he's older, instead of getting stickers for earning happy squares, he now gets to choose which reward to work for. We made pictures of rewards like getting a popsicle, going to the pet store, cooking with mama, going to Best Buy with Daddy, etc.
Before bedtime each night Micah shows Terry his behavior chart and they discuss together whether Micah had a good day or a bad day. If it's a good day then he gets a check mark. Different rewards require a different amount of checkmarks.
The first reward he chose to work for after we made the new squares was cooking with me. When he reached his goal (two check marks) I let him make "dirty worms." It took a while to convince him that it was ok to eat candy worms, chocolate mud and dirt, and toffee rocks! But he had fun and he loved sharing the messy treats with everyone we saw for the next few days! (See Hazel and Micah eating worms here.)
