Mommies Don't

The couches in our living room are only 2.5 years old. And the middle cushion of the big couch already sags. To everyone in the house, this is the ideal seat. It puts you directly in the middle of the room, directly in front of the ottomans to rest your feet, and let's not forget- directly in front of the television.

I refuse to sit there.

Yes, because I'm a mom, I refuse to sit on this cushion.

Because, in my world couches must last longer than 3 years and you don't wash the grapes until right before you eat them so they don't get squishy, and you don't eat mac n' cheese for lunch if we're having lasagna for dinner (too many carbs!).

You don't start a load of laundry if you won't be home when it's time to switch them to the dryer; you don't make a play date more than 2 days in advance 'cause you have no idea what life will be like in two days.

You don't buy the wrong kind of peanut butter (How could you do such a thing?); you don't suggest singing Twinkle, Twinkle when they're more in the mood for the Ten Commandment Bop (I *sob* hate that *sob* star sooong!!)

You don't expect the cabinets in the kitchen to ever actually stay closed (or the ones in the bathroom for that matter). You don't expect them to sleep past 6:30, even if it is a Saturday. You don't hear them sometimes... even if they're yelling. You don't compare them to each other, discipline them like each other, or reward them like each other.

And when you tuck them into bed at night, you don't ever, ever care how many rules they've broken during the day. You don't ever let them drift to sleep without reminding them that you love their sticky faces and stinky feet.

You don't really want to leave them in their beds and tiptoe out. You want to curl up in bed beside them and crawl into their dream worlds just to see where their imaginations will take them.

You don't ever doubt that it's so worth it.

Such a wonderfully poignant TRUE post! I love how well you put the part about wanting to go to their dreams. I wonder about that pretty much every time I see them sleeping.
