For Pete's Sake!

So, it turns out that Micah is a funky name. This is something that Terry and I weren't aware of at the time we chose the name, of course.

We wanted a special name- one that wasn't too common. We don't want him to have to go through his whole life being Micah D. But, we also didn't want a name no one could pronounce.

Maybe it's because we grew up reading the Bible, but we really had no idea that other's would consider Micah an odd name. I went to school with a Micah and know of at least 2 other Micahs. Terry's never known one, but he'd definitely heard of it before.

Now, everywhere we go I've got to explain the name. No, it's not Michael or Micca. It's Micah. And more than once, after I've said the name aloud properly, I then have to explain that, "No, it's not a girl name. He's a boy." I hear all the time, "Well, what an unusual/special/interesting name." And this past week, I got the oddest comment of all. The new nurse at the pediatrician's office called it "a funky name."

Poor Micah. He's already going to have to go through life explaining that it's D-O-M-I-N-O, not duh-mean-oh, (not too mention confusing those who were expecting a latin duh-mean-oh, only to meet this little blonde-haired, blue-eyed boy), but now he'll have to clarify his first name, too.

I've considered giving up my tactful answers to people's imposing moniker questions and instead saying something like, "You know, like the book in the Bible? Don't you read the Bible?" You would assume that at least people inthe church would know the name. But, no siree. I've gotten two quizzical looks after telling someone at church his name. Or maybe the looks were just due to his hair.

Maybe he'd been better off had we named him Bob, or John, or Pete. But, he's not a Pete, he's a Micah through and through. Guess this will have to be one of those character-building events in childhood that parents are always talking about.

Who tells someone they named their child a funky name?? I totally would tell people, Yes, Micah, you know, like from the Bible? haha I guess I am missing tact. And Micah is the cutest name...if we didn't have a close friend named Micah (and now nephew) we would have considered it as well.
